Happy Birthday to My Second Born

Firstly, Happy Birthday to my second born, our middle child, Bradley Roland Holmes! I love that little dude like there is no tomorrow ~ just like the others, and he is no exception. Yet; Bradley does take the cake for his ability to make you melt. “Dad it’s okay… only you can top me for clumsiness!”

Wow, just wow… Twelve years of Bradley has been amazing. Bradley has shone his light bright and everyone he meets is his friend! Sometimes it takes a little bit since he’s a little… well… Bradley. He definitely is okay to do his own thing and often does not mind going his own way and doing his own things regardless of what his friends are doing. A lot of times he says to Sarah and me, “Mom, Dad, I just want to hang out with you!” And while he says it, 15 minutes later he just wants to hang out by himself and practice his guitar or build something cool with Lego… or draw!

12 years the Artist

Rather than spending the time doing homework, or chores, or paying attention in church (he’s probably paying attention) he’s got his doodles! He doodles on everything - I’m sure if he had textbooks there would be doodles in them too! Bradley may get that from me, as I was a doodler, too! But I might add, Bradley is very talented on the doodles and I often find myself looking at the doodles and thinking that there might be a comic book artist in this kiddo. Then he plays his guitar…

Look out world, the Birthday Boy Bradley is going to melt your face! I never understood how people can play guitar. I have the dexterity of a duck, but Bradley plays with ease and grace. Matter of fact: today he is playing in his school talent show! I will link to it later after I upload it to my private YouTube account. I also learned yesterday that he will be playing (on his guitar) the opening act at his recital: “The Star Spangles Banner!” What a treat!!

Birthday Words

Bradley, Happy Birthday buddy! I love you and am excited for the journey you are on! Keep it up, dude! There are a million things I can do in this world and ten million things that you can do! Buddy, stay calm and humble and keep up the friendships that you have! Listen, love, and take heed in the fact that you are loved! Happy Birthday, son!

Season 4: Episode3: The Translation Lie

Introduction One of the most common pieces of advice Veterans hear during transition is simple: “Translate your MOS.” The idea sounds reasonable. Replace acronyms with civilian terminology. Turn missions into projects. Convert leadership into management language. Take...

The History of United States Military Challenge Coins

Beyond Survival – Learning

Learning Importance to Veterans I didn’t set out to create a blog series on this topic. But after re-reading my last article, I realized something — this conversation is needed. The number of people who read it (or at least clicked on it) was higher than I expected....

What is Important to Veterans

I’ve got a question for you… and then a follow-up question. What is important? Why is it important to you? The answers to those questions will make immediate sense to some of you. To others, they’ll sound simple — maybe even obvious. But there’s a difference between...

Season 4: Episode 2: Civilians are Watching

Movies, television, and social media have created familiar images of Veterans — the unstoppable warrior, the haunted survivor, or the flawless patriot. While often meant to honor service, these portrayals can quietly shape how civilians view and interact with Veterans...

Anxiety of Everyday Life

Understanding Anxiety in the Life of Veterans Anxiety in the scheme and life of things comes in many different forms and changes within the confines and communities of military Veterans. Soldiering is not a minimal commitment- there are soldiers that deserve and earn...

Season 4: Episode 1: That’s Bullsh*t

We’re not starting Season 4 quietly. We’re not easing in with a polite “welcome back.” We’re kicking off 2026 with a full-throttle “that’s bullsh*t!” and we’re doing it the only way we know how — loud, honest, and unfiltered. Welcome to Common Veterans Season 4. This...
